Canadian Grocery Delivery Apps

Seven delivery app icons on a black background.

When it comes to grocery delivery in Canada, there are a few options to choose from. Finding the right app for you and knowing which ones are the best value can take some work.

We have tried seven different delivery apps, and we are sharing our experience with each one.

The apps we tried are the most common ones available. Some are just grocery delivery, and others have features like restaurant delivery and rideshare.

When you can’t get to the store, these apps can be a huge convenience, especially for busy families or those who do not have access to a vehicle.

Which Apps Did We Try?

Over the past year, we have tried seven different apps.

  • PC Express
  • Walmart Delivery Pass
  • Voila
  • Uber
  • Door Dash
  • Skip The Dishes
  • Instacart

We used each app for at least three months to better understand how they work and whether it is consistent.

How Did We Compare The Apps?

For our comparison in this article, we used the same eight items for each cart, and did the orders on the same day to compare pricing and the totals for each cart, including taxes, service fees, and delivery fees, if applicable.

What Products Did We Use?

The items we used are all priced by unit, not weight, to get a more accurate total. These items are ones we found we added to our cart the most over the three months of using the apps. The items are:

  • Milk. We compared the price of 4L of 2% milk.
  • Bread. Our choice for this was Wonder Bread, because it was readily available, except at Voila, where we chose Dempster’s. We added 2 loaves to the cart.
  • Dempster’s Bagels. We added 2 packages to the cart.
  • Large eggs.
  • Sour Cream.
  • Cheese. We chose the generic brand cheese, No Name, Great Value, and selection.
  • Half and Half cream. 1L container.
  • Butter. Again, we chose the generic brands.

How Do The Apps Compare?

It isn’t surprising that all the apps have their own benefits, and pricing can fluctuate from app to app.

We found the grocery apps differed from the delivery apps when it came to pricing, but service charges were what really made a difference.

PC Express

PC Express is a Loblaws-branded delivery and curbside pickup service. All of the Loblaws-branded stores are included, depending on where you live. We have a No Frills, Loblaws, and Real Canadian Superstore available for delivery in our area.

PC Express is $120 per year for unlimited deliveries and curbside pickup. We did get a yearly subscription for $39 when we signed up, and at the time of this posting, a yearly subscription is $30 if you have never had a subscription before (at the time of this post, January 2026).

Before finalizing your order, you can pick the substitutions you want if any items are out of stock. You can also choose no substitution.

We used Loblaws and No Frills for this article. The minimum amount for delivery is $30.

NoFrills

The total for this store was $41.82. There were no taxes or service fees on this order, nor was there a charge for bags.

NoFrills uses DoorDash in our area to shop and deliver orders.

Loblaws

The same items at Loblaws were slightly more than at NoFrills. The total was $42.68. Again, there were no taxes, service fees, or bag fees.

The orders are picked by a Loblaws employee and delivered by DoorDash in our area.

Overall, we enjoy using PC Express and find the cost was well worth it. We also collect PC Optimum points on our orders, and if you choose pickup, you earn extra points. There are also offers online for bonus points.

One of the great things about this app is that you can add multiple addresses for delivery. This can be extremely handy for families to be able to share access to one account.

A couple of downsides include the hold of 125% of your order total until your order is complete. We usually have the difference back in our account the next day, but if you are using points to pay for your order, they will charge you the full amount of the order, plus 25%, until your order is complete.

Price matching is also not available in the app for NoFrills and Real Canadian Superstore.

One more point to mention is that PC Express does reimburse you if your items are not fresh or are damaged. It does take up to 48 hours to get the refund.

Walmart Delivery Pass

With the Walmart Delivery Pass, the eight items cost $42.17. There were no charges for bags, nor were there service fees or taxes. The minimum amount for delivery is $35.

When we first started using Walmart Delivery Pass, you could choose substitutions. Now we have found that the option is not available. The good thing is that if an item is out of stock, Walmart chooses a similar item, and if it costs more, they don’t charge you more. Recently, we ordered a 1L bottle of Dr Pepper in our order, and they were out of stock, so it was replaced with a 2L bottle at no additional cost.

Walmart also has coupons in their app that you can add to your order for additional savings.

If you get something that you are not happy with, they have a great refund policy. When we received a product that was expiring the next day, they refunded the cost immediately.

The monthly subscription is $8.97, or $89 for the yearly subscription.

Voilà

Voilà was on the pricier side for store apps. The total for this order with a subscription was $51.62. There is a charge for bags and taxes on the bags.

This service is also limited to only a few cities in Canada: Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec City, Calgary, and Edmonton.

The stores included in this service are Empire Company Stores: Sobey’s, Longo’s. Fresh Co and Farm Boy.

There are no flyer deals when using this service. Voilà does have its own sales, which are separate from the flyers and sometimes have free product offers.

You can collect Scene+ points on orders.

They have a more complicated delivery subscription than others. They offer midweek service, offering delivery only on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. And they offer anytime delivery subscriptions. And they vary for one month, three months, six months and one year.

Instacart

Instacart offers more variety when it comes to the stores you can order from. We used this service for two different stores to compare the overall pricing: NoFrills and Walmart. We used these so we could compare the difference between the store delivery and Instacart.

NoFrills

For the order at NoFrills, the total was $49.56. Most of the items were in-store pricing. They do not honour flyer sale pricing. There is a service charge and taxes charged on orders.

Orders do arrive faster than if you use the store app, but the additional cost was $7.74.

Walmart

The order from Walmart was $48.73. Again, there was a service charge and tax charged. The difference was $6.56 more than the Walmart Delivery Pass App.

The cost of a yearly subscription is $99. A monthly subscription is $9.99. Overall, this is a more expensive option but has more stores to choose from, but you do have to pay the service fees and taxes for each store you shop at.

DoorDash

DoorDash is a popular app for restaurant delivery, and they also offer grocery delivery. The total for DoorDash using NoFrills was $49.18. This amount included tax, bag fee, and service fees. It was $7.36 more than using the PC Express app.

Substitutions are not something that can be done in the app. We were contacted by our Dasher to ask if we wanted something else when items were out of stock.

DoorDash costs $9.99 per month for DashPass. If you are an Amazon Prime member, you can get DashPass at no charge for 12 months (at the time of this post, January 2026).

If you already have DashPass, then it may be a good option for grocery delivery because it does have other benefits, like restaurant delivery.

Skip The Dishes

Skip the Dishes is another great app to use if you already have Skip+. They do not have NoFrills available on their app in our area, so we chose Walmart. The total for the Walmart order was $58.30. The service fees, taxes and bag fees were higher than those of other delivery apps.

Skip+ is free with an eligible CIBC account (at the time of this post, January 2026) for one year. Then it is at a reduced price. You do need to pay with your CIBC card in order to get the reduced pricing. When paying with our CIBC card, this order was 55.01. That is still $12.84 more than shopping directly from the Walmart App.

There are additional services with Skip The Dishes, such as restaurant delivery, and there are more stores to choose from. This is a good option if you have Skip+ and a CIBC card and don’t want another app to deal with.

The cost of Skip+ is $9.99 per month.

Uber

We used Uber for both Walmart and NoFrills. The Walmart order was $48.97 when using Uber One. The NoFrills order was $50.48. Uber does charge service fees, bag fees, and taxes.

Uber has the most services included in Uber One. Rideshare and restaurant delivery are two of the most popular, and you can get 5% off rideshare with a subscription. The cost is $96 yearly, or $9.99 monthly.

There are sometimes special offers in the app for up to 30% off, but you have to spend a larger amount to get it. Our offer was 30% off on a $70 order, but once we added $70, the total was still $60 because of the fees that were added.

Which App Is Best?

So which app is the best? That answer is hard to say. To be honest, the best app is the one that works best for you.

We have cancelled the subscription to Voila because we found it limiting and not worth the cost.

Our subscription to Uber is ending as well because we found it to be on the expensive side, and we already have other restaurant delivery apps that are included in other subscriptions.

The most used grocery delivery app we have is PC Express. For us, it works the best. The cost of the yearly subscription was reasonable, and collecting PC Optimum points is a bonus. Overall, the orders we make are almost always cheaper than those of other apps.

We also still use our Walmart app because we can get other items delivered with our groceries. We had fans delivered with our groceries last summer.

For us, using more than one app makes sense. Although we have Skip The Dishes and DoorDash, the extra charges with those apps more than cover the cost of a yearly subscription to PC Express and Walmart Delivery Pass. And these apps were lifesavers when our car broke down, and we needed groceries. They are also a great way for our kids to order snacks because we don’t have a grocery store close by.

If you are able to get to the store to do your own shopping, and delivery apps are only used occasionally, then there may not be a need for grocery apps. But if you cannot always get to the store and need delivery, there are options. And sometimes the apps are a better value than having to use a rideshare or taxi service to get to and from the store.

We will be discussing this in more detail in an upcoming podcast, and we will be adding a video to YouTube in the coming days showing how we compared the apps.

We would love to hear from you. If you have any questions or ideas for further discussion on this topic or others, leave us a comment below.
